This is one of those accounts that look great on the surface. Described by Natwest as an ‘Account for you and your family’, the natwest select platinum account offers to do so much that you may wonder how you ever survived without it. For the small sum of £16 per month you get the benefits of; worldwide travel insurance, mobile phone cover, breakdown cover and 50% of meals in many restaurants.

If we look more into this policy, we begin to see that the £192 per year actually doesn’t get you very much…

Travel insurance for a family can be bought for around £27 and £14 for a single person. Once you deduct this, we can look into the phone cover, which has a £75 excess and replaces broken phones with refurbished ones (maybe not so desirable now). The breakdown cover is not comprehensive and as such it doesn’t cover costs once your vehicle’s been taken to the repairer. Consider when you like to eat out, if it is of an evening, weekend or for a special occasion then the 50% off is going to have no appeal. This is because many restaurants apply restrictions to the desirable eating times, making your ‘Tastecard’ a pointless incentive.

If you were not aware of the restrictions then Quantum Refunds may be able to help.
